Eighty Irish women die each year from cervical cancer despite it being a treatable disease when detected early. Dr Shirley McQuaid of the Well Woman centre joins Aileen O Meara to talk about a vaccine available for teenagers and the prospect of a national plan to implement the vaccine that is 100% effective against two types of the virus that causes Cervical Cancer. Dr McQuaid mentions the lack of a national screening programme, and it was this shortfall that inspired the new online resource www.cervicalcancer.ie . Set up by Jo’s Trust in the UK, Pamela Morton tells Vhi Health Club that the site is a support for all aspects of the disease, so that women in Irelandcan be informed.
